Re: The "racist" Hallmark card?
oh.......my........god..........that is THE dumbest thing I have heard that group do......my wife works at Hallmark, I've heard that card in person, I would have never in a hundred years jumped to the conclusion those morons did. How overly sensitive do you have to be to hear "black whores" in there????
It's soooooo Obvious they said "black holes" and you'd have to be just about retarded to not get that, especially in the context of the whole card.....OMG.......idiots....
You'd have to really be out looking for something to get you to arrive at that.......I guess since Obama was elected and we've pretty much proven racism isnt as bad as they have been claiming all these years it's been slow in the whole "lets blame whitie" area they have to jump so far to stay in the limelight....sheesh....

									Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

I didn't hear what they heard. They are again trying to pull the race card, UGH!!! They should be ashamed of themselves and maybe buy a hearing aid while they're at it. I didn't see or hear anything wrong with that card. How stupid.

They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of kings and queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
Its heaven and hell, oh well
I am Vengeance...I am the Night!
I swear to God...[Batman]SWEAR to Me!!

Re: The "racist" Hallmark card?
That is really retarded, and it further illustrates the continuing loss of our personal freedoms under the guise of 'political correctness.' An instructor at the college where I work was also accused of being a racist when he talked about black holes in outer space. The whole thing was dropped however when the term was shown in the text book to be in reference to a collapsed star. Also, there was a big stink raised over a noose found in a class room. The instructor was discussing various forms of executions, which included the electric chair, the gas chamber, lethal injection and hanging. He had models of all of these different forms, but for some reason he forgot the hangman's noose, and was accused of being a racist. Again it didn't stick, because even his African American students explained that he was making an illustration about capital punishment.
But I wil repeat the question in a previous post: "How overly sensitive do people have to be?"
Go figure.

Re: The "racist" Hallmark card?
Yeah, this is pretty stupid, but the idea that racism in America is a thing of the past is equally ridiculous. You would think that an organization that has worked so hard for so long to combat racism and discrimination would be a bit more selective in their battles, so as not to give ammunition to those who wish to argue against the genuine need for racial sensitivity.

Re: The "racist" Hallmark card?
MacPhantom, there's no doubt in my mind that racial prejudice still exists. There is still an American Nazi Party, a Ku Klux Klan, a White Aryans Nations, a Black Panthers, and a whole host of other hate groups spewing their rhetorical poison all over the place. Some of these "organizations" even have chapters in other European countries. But, "political correctness" is NOT the way to make people more racialy sensitive. All you will achieve through "political correctness" is the loss of freedom and resentment. If anything, that gives ammunition to the bigots who blame ethnic minorities for the loss of personal liberties.
As for Hallmark, it is my belief that everyone who's ever watched The Science Channel, the History Channe, National Geographic, or A & E, KNOWS what a black hole is. Virtualy EVERYONE ELSE has heard about them through the Sci Fi genre and other sources, and I'm sure black holes are discussed in just about every 6th throuth 8th grade science class. Mistaking a black hole for a "black whore" is beyond stupid IMHO. If they actualy did put out something racist, thenit SHOULD be taken off the shelf. I would not purchase anything from any company that supported Aparthide, or Nazism, or was racist in their philosophies or business practices. My major problem with Nike shoes is the fact that they exploit child labor in Asia, in order to pad their proffits, and they also supported Aparthide.
But let's be for real here. A black hole, has NOTHING TO DO with race. It's a celstrial phenominon caused by the collapse of a star, with a gravitational pull so powerful that not even light can escape it, hence that's why it's a black hole.

Re: The "racist" Hallmark card?
Nobody here said it. But you said "I guess since Obama was elected and we've pretty much proven racism isnt as bad as they have been claiming all these years", which mirrors an argument I've heard elsewhere (Obama's election proves racism isn't a problem in America any more). I didn't want to go after you or your comment directly, because I like you and think you're a pretty good guy, and also you probably own a few guns.Spookymufu wrote:who said that????MacPhantom wrote:but the idea that racism in America is a thing of the past is equally ridiculous.
Trust me, Mike, I'm not a very PC guy. My views on religion in particular are well outside the mainstream, and I'm known to discuss the two taboo subjects of society (politics and religion) in both polite and impolite company. But what is happening here isn't a loss of freedom; it's an exercise in freedom. Hallmark has a right to put out any card it wants. Any group of people has the right to idiotically mis-hear what they want to mis-hear, and complain about it. Hallmark, as a business, has to do a cost-benefit analysis, and determine whether they will gain more customers by telling the offended group that they are idiots, or by pulling the card and making sure they clean up the audio on all future cards they release.Pumpkin_Man wrote: But, "political correctness" is NOT the way to make people more racialy sensitive. Some people are more easily offended than others. Some folks have experienced a lifetime of discrimination and racism, and are more likely to hear something as racist, even if it clearly isn't. Or clearly isn't to someone like me, who hasn't had to spend my life being treated different because of the color of my skin. To me, I can't see how anyone could not understand what the garbled sound clip was actually saying in the context of the card itself, but then, I haven't lived a life as the target of both overt and subtle racism.

Re: The "racist" Hallmark card?
mac mac mac...I said isnt as bad as they claim, I never said didnt exist anymore.....But I dont think it is as bad as they want us to believe....but I do agree with you that they should pick their fights more carefully and go after real offenders or they are going to come off looking (moreso) like clowns......much like Jessy Jackson and Al Sharpton (to a lessor degree) already do.
