I used navy or dark blue foam board. I used a round toothpick to place the holes for the stars, making them various sizes as I went along. i then cut a frame(strips) out of styrofoam to fit the perimeter of the foam boards, which were taped end to end with duct tape. The styrofoam strips (frame) were glued in place.
Behind the board within the boarders of the frame, a string of 50 white lights were taped in place. Some lights were positioned directly over the holes and many were placed away from some of the holes. This allowed variation in light intensity so the stars appeared at different "distances". I then completely taped up the back, covering the lights (not allowing the tape to touch them). i again used duct tape . I did not want light seepage to occur from behind the boards or around the edges. I then placed additional dots (stars) at random using white craft paint mixed with a glow-in-the-dark paint additive. Ambient lighting provided by tall blacklight lamps positioned to the sides of the display caused them to flouresce.
Thanks Pennywise .
And thank you DoD for the welcome!

RedRanger3... that - looks - SO - Fantastic!!

It's so beautiful with the little lights and everything! I want to live there!
You're very clever and artistic, and you must be incredibly patient because lord knows I couldn't sit there taping all those little lights into place
Welcome to the forums! Hope you have a terror-ific time here

Welcome to the forum, and WOWWWWW!!!!!
I am so impressed by your village display. The starry-night backdrop is just to die for!!! What a GREAT idea. My husband will be so sorry I saw that
We're not using our village this year, so that will give us plenty of time to work out the kinks! Thanks for the amazing pics. You really have a great eye for detail, and your lighting is impressive. I really enjoyed the way you put the fog around the Gothic Ruins piece.
Outstanding work!!
