The OWL: Halloween Creature or Not?

Post by Haunted Horseman » Thu Sep 06, 2007 7:46 pm

I noticed that over the past 30 years, the Owl has kind of faded out as a symbol of Halloween. I remember a lot more classical Halloween decorations including owls of various shapes and forms. I personally am a fan of the owl and would like to see it make a comeback in regard to Halloween symbolism. I've love the owl ever since I attende WiseOwl Nursery school back in 1974... :D But I'd like your opinion. So what do you think ? Is the Owl still viable as a Halloween Creature?

Oh most definitely - it is a creature of the night and with its haunting call is a symbol of the spooky, the mysterious and the downright traditional essence of Halloween! :D

I think of the owl as a Halloween sentry of sorts, the nocturnal creature who bares witness to all of the mysterious midnight spirits and their activities...yes, they should definitely be recognized for their roles during the season.

There are stories where people used to think owls could swoop down and devour the souls of the living, the hoot of an owl would cause a lot of fear!

Yes, oh, yes. It's even more weird if you do not have a lot of owls in your area, and then every once in a while, late, late and night, one of them decides to land on the telephone pole across the street and go "Whoo...whoo...whoo..." in a spooky way.....

I can't picture my favorite Halloween special of all time without those kids walking through the pumpkin patch getting scared by the ghouls, and then at the end of the intro, the owl flys at you all "hooohoooo".

I still have my own owl prop for Halloween use only! I believe I bought it 2 or 3 years ago at Lowe's. Sorry, I don't have a pic of it at this time, but will take a pic of it anytime. It is 2 foot tall brown owl with glow-shiny brown eyes!

I love owls and have several pieces in my Halloween collection...some with feathers and one made of iron with amber marble eyes, a few Black owl lanterns and some dept 56 candle holders that are sooo cute. Also fun fact....Owls make no sound when they fly that way they can sneak up on their prey!

I totally see the owl as a symbol of Halloween. They are fascinating creatures of the night worth of much praise :D
