Re: Catching up

Being married to a public school teacher for several decades, I am aware of how the teachers' hands are often tied. The No Child Left Behind initiative was probably well intentioned, but in practice it became No Child Can Fail. Teachers were themselves punished if the kids didn't get passed along ...

Re: Catching up

There is so much wisdom in what you've written that I scarcely know how to comment on it. I know I am very leery of the cashless economy, digital currency, etc. I worry that our wealth will be at the discretion of TPTB once physical currency is gone.

Re: Catching up

That's a crazy story, about those two girks' not being able to make change. That's such basic math. I think my kids were learning that in first grade.

I was a college English prof and have graded thousands of papers. I would never want to do that job now, with AI in the mix. The last time I taught ...

Re: Catching up

It is true that the schools have gotten worse and worse in promoting specific agendas. I ran into that a little bit when my daughter was in high school, not so much in the schools but in Girl Scouts. She was working on their advanced awards, which at that time involved choosing among some booklets ...

Re: Catching up

I'm starting another post just to break things up a bit. I am familiar with the term "Karen" and its modern slang usage, though I have no idea why it caught on. I haven't known a great number of women named Karen in my life. Does it perhaps reference a character in a movie or tv show?

I can ...

Re: Catching up

HH, it is unfathomable to me that someone would accost a family over purchasing Christmas decorations. That is really terrible. The way that woman spoke to you about "the man on the stick" makes me wonder if she were a militant atheist rather than an adherent of any religion.

There aren't many ...

Re: Catching up

HH, you are absolutely right. Extortion, not blackmail. Thanks for the correction.

If you lived in the South you'd be running into people who disapprove of the "Happy Holidays" greeting. Of course, our schools have capitulated to the woke crowd. It's now Winter Break, not Christmas Break. Most ...

Re: Catching up

I'm sorry to hear that some people have been trying to blackmail you by giving a bad on line review of your restaurant. That's the way I look at those YouTubers who think they deserve free food or else. It's just petty blackmail. At least you have a great many loyal and satisfied customers who tell ...

Re: Catching up

Yes, I've heard about the Mummy continuation. We love that movie, so I hope it's a good script. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz (sp?) are both Oscar winners now.

My daughter still has the Daphne costume, so I guess she's just waiting for the right opportunity to wear it. It didn't happen this year ...

Re: Catching up

Sadly, no, my two at-home kids did not costume this year. My daughter was actually working on Nov 1 at a Christian bookstore, where some people (and, more pointedly, some customers) are not into Halloween. My younger son, who works at night, was still sleeping when the church party happened from 5-7 ...

Re: Catching up

Thank you so much for sharing your plus-perfect Halloween weekend with us! Ours was quite subdued even by our own standards, but we did have several groups of ToTers pass through, and a church party on Nov 1 with Trunk or Treat at the end, so we celebrated.

My Chicago son attended a costume party ...

Oh, those are great! Are those giant monsters skeletal werewolves in that one photo? There's a slightly different one against a lamp post.

Re: Happy Halloween!

We had s nice little party at church last night. Everybody ate chili, the kids played games and had a costume contest, and then it wrapped with Trunk or Treating in the parking lot. I always decorate my car to the hilt. Some do and some don't. It was an enjoyable time.

Re: Classic Halloween photos

I remember comics like that. My mother bought them for me when we went on cross-country vacations. I still remember some of the stories. One was about a man who gradually realized he was the corpse at the funeral. He was dead but still fully aware.
