I have saved several glass jam jars this year and have painted them in a couple of colours for the party this year, I think I'm going to either hang them from trees, with string or garden twine or use them to mark out the path/drive up to the house.
All I did was thoroughly clean and remove the old labels and then with a half inch gloss painting brush, I just used a conservative(not too much-don't want runs as it flows quite a lot) amount of glass paint all over the jar, some I have painted orange and some green.
I then used a tube of out liner and drew some pumpkin faces on the orange glass jars(eyes and mouths etc) and some pentagrams and stars on the green jars.
On the party night, I shall situate them about with a small night light candle in to light the way....should look quite effective...and don't fret about the finish too much, as long as you colour the jars, no ones going to be inspecting them too closely!( better not do anyway...tee hee)
If I remember, I will post some pix after the party!

Re: Glass Painting old jam jars...
Sounds cool. I've been saving all my jars to expand on our "Jars
Filled With Weirdness" collection. Rubber spiders,lizards,etc..look great in a jar of food coloring and water. If you can spare it cooking oil with a few drops of red or yellow(for blood and formaldehyde respectively) looks great.
As for our path it will be 99 cent plastic jack-o-lanterns and faux tea lights.

Re: Glass Painting old jam jars...
sounds interesting
Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!
